New Orleans' Black Parading Traditions & Arts Enrichment Program

Pertunia's educational programming was created to inspire school groups to understand and appreciate the fundamental cultural elements of New Orleans'Afro-Caribbean processional traditions. The focus is to partner with schools and to provide them with a cultural curriculum on New Orleans' Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, Mardi Gras Indians, Baby Dolls, Skull and Bone Gangs, their second line parades, and the music that drives their processions.

Since the 1800s, these organizations have aided New Orleans' working-class African American neighborhoods and helped to ensure their survival in the face of discrimination and tragedy. The program stresses the importance to youth of nurturing and maintaining the social ties of their community through these neighborhood organizations and of developing the skills and values necessary for participation in these neighborhood traditions.
